Brenda Berkman was/is a trailblazer for women firefighters. She sued NYC for the right to take the test, and won. Passed the same test as the men and after 24+ years retired in 2006 as a Captain. Works for gender equality. magazine.law.nyu.edu/index.html%3...

The first woman firefighter, Molly Williams, was a black slave in NYC, 1817. She worked as a domestic for a man who was a volunteer firefighter, went to calls with him, and cooked for the fire brigade.
