7) inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

A moving exploration of the absurdity behind sacrificing for one’s art. The struggle between artistic integrity and capitalist interests. Of holding onto and letting go. I think everyone who considers themselves an artists identifies with this movie in some way.

6) Malcolm X (1992)

One of the greatest living actors giving one of his most iconic performances with Denzel Washington playing Malcolm X. A sprawling biopic that really captures the history of race and oppression in the United States with a frankness most filmmakers fear to touch to this day.

5) Black Dynamite (2009)

Probably not a controversial opinion at this point but as far as parody films go I think this is one of the best ever made. Great use of visual comedy that feels lost with modern filmmaking nowadays.

4) PulpFiction (1994)

I know, I know, I know. Sorry I kind of grew up watching this and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hold a special place with me. The humor, the sensuality, the action, the dialogue. I think it still holds up.

3)The Princess Bride (1987)

This movie is one that I’ve seen more times than I can count. Probably wore out the vhs copy my family had back when those were a thing. So many great lines, moments, heart. So much to love.

2) All That Jazz (1979)

Saw this movie a few years ago and just fell in love with the choreography and editing. The narrative themes of an artist struggling with his love for work and the people in his life that he pushes away really hit me close.

1) Mulholland Drive (2001)

This movie probably will always hold a special place for me. It really opened up the way I watch film, as an experience that operates on a level beyond simple plot synopsis.
