I watched a show on Netflix (The Untamed) and I know pretty much no Chinese but the translation removed so much context it was truly awful. Good translators are a gift

I sat there with basically my own subtitle book full of academic explanations and watched and followed/read as I watched and went "ohhhh, oh shit I get it now" (my fav is still Much Ado 💖)

Truly I didn't understand it until a very good friend (English prof) was so morally offended at my lack of knowledge (my high school English prof refused to teach it) that she shipped me a teacher's edition of the full works and sent me choice live productions to watch
