As a photographer, I feel like backgrounds are just as critical as the subject. When I first saw this sparrow, he/she was backed by the dull greys and browns of late autumn... but just a couple steps to the side and everything changed.

After very heavy rains there was a lot of surface water running over piles of freshly fallen autumn leaves. A slow shutter speed gave the water a soft milky feel as it poured through the bright colours.
