Personal profit versus group solidarity, nutshell.

We are at the level of rhetorical discourse, though - people resist organization because they have some fealty to bosses that don’t even have their hands near the levers of power. Middle managers cutting under the table deals can defeat materialist projects just as a surely as bought legislators.

Buddy it’s wild being in a union and having so many people in their cognitive dissonance be like, “I disagree with the union, but they’re right.” As in, “I disagree with the need for unions but they’re right that the boss is fucking me and I am entitled to compensation.”

More often these people are the bread and butter of people like Trump or Ben Shapiro - people who feel left behind or divorced from society because mores have shifted so quickly. Divisive messaging massages their disaffection. They’re a major contingent at my job, and manual laborers generally.

In building communities these are valuable workers and leaders, and perhaps the rigidity in what traits and roles they value makes them harder and heartier - zealotry tends to do that. Regardless, how do you get their buy-in for a more egalitarian society? How do you bring them into this fold?

People who are so entwined with the concept of “masculinity” to the point that deviations from it elicit violent response are one of the key stumbling blocks of any materialist project. In my anecdotal experience these are people with greater than average skillsets and overall utility to a group.
