Took a stroll on the beach this evening, and this little fella paused his scurrying to say, "Hello."

Happy West Virginia Day!

I know what you've heard about it. But, there are good people here, doing good things, and fighting for good things. One of these days, you'll hear about them, too.

No matter where in the country I am, I am always a West Virginian.

Finishing strong.

H signed up not knowing what to expect, & she might tell you she bit off more than should chew. Don't believe it. She did AWESOME in her first race.

I don't know if she'll ever run another race with me, but we did this one & it was great.

Today, I ran a sub-10 minute mile.

I realize many can do it, but it's the first time I, at 46yo, have knowingly done it.

Me...the short, chubby kid who had to wear the husky jeans. Whose baseball teammates nicknamed him "Flash" for all the ironic reasons.

This one was for that kid.

When I first moved into my own place, I bought a washer & dryer as my first large credit purchases. They lasted 20ish years.

I also purchased this snow shovel from Big Lots for $5, plastic blade and all. Now, 25 winters later, it's still my trusty sidekick for clearing the driveway and front steps.

I'll play along...quite the snapshot in time...I hope (1) the tool exists down the line to see what it says following more use, and (2) if it does exist, that I remember to run it again!

Young me had this Pink Panther. He was well-loved & mom was cool enough to make him clothes-you can't see the ultra-80s pants.

Tonight my 7yo found him.

Which led to finding the 70s cartoon. And, since the theme was the 1st thing I learned on piano, pulling out the keyboard. Hilarity has ensued.

Parcheesi, a warm fire, and Buffalo Trace with snow on the ground outside. A good evening.

I find this to be a great point.

I'm all for development of theory across numerous fields. Yet, we'd all do well to remember this when it comes to practice.

Always a good day when you walk down the street to visit your local book store.

A rustic old fashioned kind of night, with small batch bitters to spice it up. These orange and fig "Sycophant" bitters from Crude are amazing.

A touch of levity...

It's still one of my favorite things to find my daughter has sneakily loaded my phone's gallery with selfies. Even the super cool, faux tough, duck face ones.

Thurmond fascinates me, as does much of my home state. We cling tightly to the world that was knowing the investment to restore it, by and large, isn't coming. To demolish is to cleave, and that's unbearable.

Slow deterioration is a mournful dirge.

More insight from E. H. James and L. P. Wooten in "The Prepared Leader: Emerge from Any Crisis More Resilient than Before" (p. 59).

Add to the highlighted sentence, if you will, different people in a community and we see a key area of overlap from the crisis leadership & emergency mgmt literatures.

Ending 2023 doing something I wish I would have done more of throughout the calendar year: cooking for my family.

A simple American goulash comfort dinner to welcome opportunities in 2024.

Truthfully, I was more of a Garfield guy growing up. But...the Peanuts Christmas Special (along with the Great Pumpkin l, Charlie Brown and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown) has been a favorite. Thanks to my girls for putting this in my stocking!

Sensemaking in crisis and what it means for crisis leaders...I have long thought and taught that sensemaking and sensegiving are key components of crisis leadership, and I've been met with skepticism because they seem so SIMPLE.

Yet, even as people respond with "simple," they know it's not true.
