Legitimate reasons

A guy with a shirt with Rando written on it tells the author : so tired of hearing the left talk about fascism. it feels so disrespectful to compARE WHAT'S HAPPEning in the u.s. to the millions of victims of Nazi Germany. She replies : you seem to think that the death camps happened overnight, but it was a multi- decades long crescendo, filled with people telling the regime critics to stop overreacting. by its nature, the only moment you can call out fascist rhetoric is before fascism is fully up and running. I'd rather speak up early and be wrong than not saying anything and my silence be complicit. considering how in its first year, this u.s. admin has already caused 625k+ public man- made deaths* by terminating USAID progams and disappeared thousands of migrants, I'd say their contempt for human life should give anyone legitimate reasons to be worried. Most of them on the planet don't have the privilege of safely transitioning or expressing themselves authentically. 4 frame comic. the first frame shows a tangram swan. text reads : they call it "aI", but large language models (llm) such as chatbots are far from intelligent: they are pattern- recognition machines that churn out whatever might sound like a reply to the thing you last said. 2nd frame shows inside a data center. text reads : that distinction matters, because the technology for actual aI simply doesn't exist. the only way for llm to get better is to feed it more data, transiting in bigger polluting data centers, scavenged always deeper into our devices. 3rd frame shows a child blowing bubbles. text reads : but once the whole internet has been fed to their llm, how can these companies promise neverending growth to their shareholders? that's what makes "AI" a bubble, kept afloat by circular investments and hype. 4th frame shows a chatbot logo. text reads : llms need us to keep interacting and coming back in order to grow. they are sycophantic by design. they amplify delusions and will never disagree with you or challenge your worldview. it's ripping apart communities for a few billionaires' hubris.

4 frame comic. someone out of frame is going around with a mic, asks a woman in some victorian dress pushing a double stroller : ma'am! do you think we should be worried about the declining birth rate in our society? she replies : what I'm anxious about is white men spewing natalist rhetoric as a gateway to control marginalized people's bodies. the main reasons the birth rate is declining are that minors aren't having babies anymore and that people have the freedom to choose if & when they have babies. also, most kids now make it to kindergarden alive. these are all good things. if white men are so worried about the birth rate, they should welcome more immigrant families, make sure new parents have long and paid work leaves, and make fertility treatments and childcare free. but I guess they're too busy being racist and misogynistic for that.

October 26th is Intersex Awareness Day.
Intersex bodies are neither wrong nor unnatural. Sex exists on a spectrum. [ID : Myrick, a boy with dark hair says : Being intersex doesn't mean to be "both a man and a woman" or "born with two sexes". It means to be born with variations in sex characteristics that do not fit nicely in the traditional male/female binary. "Sex exists within a spectrum" is written at the bottom.]

A net loss
4 frame comic. someone is interviewing people on the street with a mic. he asks a man with a red hoodie : sir! what do you think of the recent survey that suggests that less people are now identifying as transgender? was it just a fad? the man replies : the survey you're referring to was about students from 3 specific colleges who did not identify as male or female, which only tells us about non-binary people, nothing about trans women or trans men. if what you got out of this survey is that there are less trans people in the world, it's because you have a deep mis- understanding of transness to begin wthe only thing it tells us is that less non- binary students are willing to out themselves or to enroll into college. transness gets criminalized, publicly shamed and persecuted. trans folks deciding to go back into the closet or flee to safety isn't the win some people seem to think it is. it's heart- breaking, tragic, and a net loss for society.

"Democratic backsliding" is the process through which modern authoritarianism happens.

Who is Carl Schmitt, the authoritarian political theorist that the New Right and the Neocons are obsessed with?
before being the obsession of peter thiel and every favourite podcaster of your incel cousin, schmitt was the jurist who came up with the theoretical legal foundation for the nazi party's power grab and subsequent atrocities. he wrote: "sovereign is he who decides on the exception." he believed that constitutional democracies were facades for the total power of the execu- tive, since the legislative was powerless during exceptional times. schmitt also wrote about the friend-enemy distinction, which he saw as the basis of the politic. people are sorted into groups, either with you or against you, in a struggle for survival. big incel vibes, I know. in his view, liberalism challenged that "natural order" by restricting the power of the executive and by easing the distinctions with enemy groups, which he thought led to social paralysis and racial decay.

Ways to resist fascism. Drawing of a megaphone : once you have properly identified fascist rhetoric, don’t let it go unchallenged. Speak up when you witness attempts to normalize it. Picture of a book titled "resist". Knowledge is power. Learn, read, discuss about fascism and the ways fascist discourses can permeate culture and find its way in everuday conversations. Picture of someone doing a roman salute. Many hands are pointing at him. Laugh at fascists and their ideas. Take every opportunity to subject them to ridicule. The power people give them largely stems from sentimentaalinen of fear and inevitability, but they are all incompetent, insecure cowards. Picture of a button press. Most importantly, get involved in your community. Find roles for yourself and others. You might not topple a fascist government today, but you can find purpose and strength to live to fight another day.
