Also I highly recommend the Void Shadows DLC if you do get the game. The new class is really fun and only slightly OP, and the story and companion are great. I finished before Lex Imperialis came out so I can't speak to how that DLC turned out.

If you took a run at them chronologically that might be why. The early books were written before Pratchett had really found his voice for the series and aren't representative of the later books. A good one to start with is Guards! Guards!
