I mean, the Civil War was pretty much specifically motivated by American conservatives trying to stop democracy.
And there were plenty of shenanigans even before that.
You could say this issue has been ignored for centuries in America because it was never a convenient time to deal with it.

Most of the people he served were such huge jerks that his betrayals could be seen as a net win for everybody.

I think they should have pursued some middle ground where they at least had some idea of what the biggest story beats of the trilogy ought to be before finishing the first part of it.
Then again, JJ Abrams did give us 'Lost', so maybe they got what they paid for

My main issue with it has always been that not only was there no apparent overarching plan for the trilogy, but it was left to be improvised by two directors who both had very different ideas about what they wanted.
At some point, you have to ask why Disney would even create that environment.

The working class right believe, as a pillar of their right-wing politics, that they *ought* to serve the ultra rich. Asking them to unite with the left on this is asking them to move left.
Not that I'm *against* that, but I'd hardly call it bipartisan.

It very occasionally turns out that people who claim to be allies are secretly enemies. It's been especially true for the trans community with how far some people will go to hide their true feelings.
I think that messes with a lot of people's willingness to tolerate even mildly suspicious behaviour.

Maybe it also showed that the Fremen's priorities were changing, and they cared more about war than survival?

It clicked for me when he kept trying to take people out with a special poison only he had access to. It was less reliable than a bullet, and less discreet than any other poison. I think he just did it because the bad guys in spy movies always have some signature method.
