Die My Love is in Irish cinemas now
Postpartum psychosis is a phenomenon that as a society we kind of completely ignore. I wouldn’t be surprised if many people haven’t even heard of it, including many people who have actually given birth which like, could be good to give people the head’s up? Postpartum psychosis is rare but severe and it manifests as the likes of hallucinations, delusions, and severe mood changes. Here we receive a nuanced, empathetic exploration of the experience. There is a mirror between the isolation Grace is experiencing and Jackson’s Mam who kindly tells Lawrence “You’ll come back.” How horrifying. With all the knife-play Lawrence engages in, I couldn’t stop thinking about Britney Spears and the unforgiveable treatment lobbed at her by paparazzi, by the public and by her own family. It’s telling that Ramsay chooses to show Lawrence’s character make active displays of care, for example she ties Patz’ elderly father’s shoelaces when no one is watching, she brushes his mother’s hair to help her feel good about herself. The message may be that the issue with Grace isn’t that she’s uncaring or lacks the maternal instinct or whatever we tend to enjoy lobbing at women who misbehave, what’s happening with her is an unfortunate combination of social isolation and a lack of a support system.
