I could talk on and on about this book. Simply put, as a reader, I adored it. As an artist, the imagery enthralled me and inspired me, as did the experimental approach to voice. As a human, this book challenged my critical thinking and deepened my empathy. I couldn’t recommend it more.

4. Morality
When the revelation at the close of the book arrived, I didn’t expect to be so conflicted on the morality of the events. This challenged the part of my brain that perhaps wanted an “easy” answer (e.g. numbing Hollywood plots) and I spent hours afterwards (continued —>)

I think Crow Country also beautifully captures the conflict of resistance to and willingness for change - captured beautifully in the figure of Bill, whose contentment with the old ways and his quiet life were deeply moving and very pertinent to read in 2024.

3. Time and Change
I think Andy Charman beautifully captures two contrasting but co-existing timescales: quickening social and industrial change (shifting social aspirations and the growth of railways) yet the slow, imperceptible progression of geological time. This reminded me of (continued —>)

2. Local Dialect
Being a West Country-born girl myself, I really loved reading the sections in the local Dorset dialect and felt very connected to that part of the world again. I found myself dipping back into the memories of the dialect and letting this carry me along like a river through the text.

1. Shifting Narration
The shifting and diverse style of narration in Crow Country left me with a feeling of having experienced a time and place from a multitude of perspectives, developing a deep sense of historical and contemporary empathy and challenging my thinking.
