That said, it really has wrapped back around to being insufferable at the worst of times.

I think a part of it comes as a counter to the opposite extreme of people who will shun any adaptation or inspiration of literary work and the people who like them. Speaking for myself personally, I had times in my teens when I’d proudly go “I’m not reading the manga”…
