Ooh, I've not come across that one, Philip. It clearly escaped my notice as a book-hungry child!

I've always thought it *was* a true story! I can't remember if I ever read the book but it was the first film I was ever taken to see in the cinema. I was 5 and I loved it.

The Phoenix and the Carpet was my fave E. Nesbitt book, and I also read the Wombles prior to their TV debut. Alas I came to Orlando quite late though I love Kathleen Hale's illustrations.. Porterhouse Major, (for it was he), was a ginger who was fed porterhouse steak and wouldn't stop growing.

Ooh, I missed out Emil and the Detectives and the Jennings books. Most remiss!

For me it was The Phantom Tolbooth, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Cricket In Times Square, The Rescuers, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and pretty much anything by E Nesbit, Alan Garner, or Paul Gallico. Oh, and this. A book about a large ginger cat. Not at all like me, I know...
