Next up: a cartoon from the November 29, 1954 issue of Newsweek’s review of Fellowship of the Ring. Yes, they are actually called “feathered orcs” in the review!
A single panel cartoon (credited to M. Simont) showing the battle between the fellowship and orcs in Balin’s tomb. Seven members of the fellowship are shown - a wizard and six others, all of whom are barefoot. The orcs are all man-sized creatures that appear to be giant fluffy balls of feathers with arms and legs (also barefoot) sticking out, with a face that is just an enormous beak with beady eyes atop.
