Honouring British Home Child Day by remembering my great-grandfather, Albert Edward Barrett. Orphaned at 6, sent to Canada at 11 to work as a farmhand with wages withheld by Barnardo’s. He died at 31. Canada has acknowledged but not apologized for this history.

HBC was gutted, Future Shop folded both after U.S. buyouts. Roots already closed its U.S. stores (see pic). I really hope it doesn’t go the same way. We’ve lost enough.

The child turned 30, so we brought back her original pink polka dot cake—with a twist. From the front, it was all sweet and simple. From the back? Full mimic mode, complete with D&D dice and terrifying teeth. She was completely floored and said she wanted to keep it forever. Absolutely worth it.
