I prefer double-pointed needles. If you have an abundance of stitches or have trouble keeping your multiple needles in place, needle minders/caps really really help.

My sister preferred the ant-eater, using her index finger as the head, other three fingers as legs and the thumb as a polite, forgotten fourth leg.

Otherwise, I can’t recommend stitch markers and lifelines enough, when you are tackling a struggling pattern.
