And some people actively went out of their way to discourage.
In some ways, I think it is better than it was back then, but really it is probably just differently miserable because the industry has changed, but people are still just generally aholes. -_-

It is funny... long long ago, in a galaxy far far away, when I started writing and people posted on forums before LiveJournal was a thing... there was a notion amidst the pro writing community that if you could be discouraged you should be ....
