StP bike weirdo
No. Absolutely not. This situation would have gotten much worse, very, very fast, if anyone in the protest had pulled a gun.

There were medics with her afterward, so I stayed out of the way. She was up and talking when I left.

As far as I could tell, all the violence was SPPD. Feds had already left.

Yes, as far as I could tell

When she didn't go down the first time, they stepped out and coated her in spray until she finally fell.

She was in a lot of pain. I hope you're okay.

This was disgusting

I didn't arrive until relatively late, but personally, I witnessed more out-of-control behavior from SPPD than from feds today. A woman stepped in front of an SPPD van and the driver reached out the window and sprayed her point blank in the face without any apparent warning.

Not a WIRED subscriber, but NYer. Emailed Conde Nast to tell them if they keep booting staff, my business will go wherever the writers go. We're with you.

That said, I'm really surprised by this outcome--so if my predictions were totally wrong, maybe my takes are too.

But I got a million texts and an in-person campaign contact from Her, and nothing that I recallfrom him. Which i can't blame him too much for; I'm sure he wanted to avoid the potential ugliness of fighting with a former staffer.

Certainly there's (misplaced IMO) anger about problems he hasn't solved, plus the usual outrage from the old No To Everything faction that they didn't have veto power via endless "community engagement" processes anymore.

I don't think Melvin lost on policy or even really voter preference. Most people seem to see way less difference between them than I'm afraid there actually will be. Bottom line, as far as I can see, is that he didn't really campaign. Personally, I'm regretting not putting out a yard sign at least.
