The most tactile switches ever!
I did a spring swap to put a lighter spring in the hako royal clears, bring them more in line with my previous favorites, the box royals. I also lubricated them, it took a long time but I’m very happy with the result.
First plot is before spring swap, second is after.
Plot comparing the actuation force vs displacement of keyboard switches, (box royals, halo clears, and hako royal clears) This plot is prior to the spring swap. 1. The box royals takes about 64gf to actuate, and the curve has a large bump, with a steep drop off in two steps, before reaching a valley that linearly rises until bottom out. 2. The halo clears also take about 64gf to actuate, but their drop off is linear with a negative slope, instead of a steep cliff, this gives them a smoother feel, but the stronger spring makes their min force 50gf rather than the 25gf valley of the box royals. This makes them feel more tiring to hold down, and not suitable for gaming. 3. The hako royal clears peak at 75gf, which feels quite stiff, but they have a long smooth linear drop ending at 40gf. This leads to a very strong tactile feel, but the weight is heavier than I like. Plot comparing the actuation force vs displacement of keyboard switches, (box royals, halo clears, and hako royal clears) This plot simulates swapping the springs on the halo clears and the hako royal clears for a 20gf lighter spring (iirc) They now peak at 64gf to actuated and the valley for the hako royal clears bottoms out at 22gf. Because the force of a spring increases linearly with displacement, using a lighter spring actually makes the switches feel more tactile, because there is a bigger difference between the maximum and minimum force when depressing the switch. Also the bottom out force for all switches lines up at 55gf, which isn’t too tiring to hold down, making them more suitable for gaming.
