allowed him to take touches just beyond a press and play balls around the corner or through the lines, to the point where the press would give up trying to press him after a few attempts. It was glorious to watch and I feel privileged to have been watching during his era.

It was the spatial awareness, close control, and subtle touches that made him unpressable. In the latter stages of his career, after he shifted to playing deeper in the pivot, my favorite game-within-the-match to watch was to see the opposition, hyped up for a shot at the mighty reds, come flying
