I don't know if it's too soon for love but I'm infatuated.

There always is, but if you close your feed and touch grass you'll find there's also a lot to be happy about

That sounds like something both halves could say and just fuels division. The division is the point, share love and humor instead

"Vetted" for a follow chain 😂 get over yourself

I kind of disagree. People writing "character-heavy" posts are simply trying to force it on the wrong medium. I read blogs, hackernews, Usenet for long-form, when I come here and see long-form I usually regret reading it.

The next step of course will be trying to crawl them without it taking months. I had a script crawling a million in 3 days, but it will need substantial improvement for half a billion to not take 5 years

Plus email is mostly plaintext across the internet and 40% chance it ends up on a Google or Microsoft server at the other end anyway so I mostly care about not having my archived emails or incoming constantly scanned to feed me ads.

Sure, have backups, encrypt a dedicated server, or accept that the host can read the VPS if they want to, even encrypted.

Still harder than just giving them the data though. Everything I mentioned above is hosted in my house, apart from email which I have on a VPS with a provider I trust

All mainstream tech is infuriatingly like this now. I have an Android tablet I use for o'reilly once a week or so and it always wants updating. My Kindle "optimises my kindle store experience" every week or two, 20% of the time it breaks the store and I have to wait for the next update

Contacts and calendars can be hosted with Baikal or NextCloud fairly easily, Drive can be in SeaFile or NextCloud, emails with xmox or stalwart. Take this opportunity to get away from hosting your data outside of your control

Do you selfhost email? It's easily doable from Hetzner or OVH, just look into xmox.nl or stalwart
Mox: modern, secure, all-in-one mail server

I tried a flip for a while but still needed to keep an android around for WhatsApp. Now I have an OPPO with sucky performance. It's useful for whatever I need, but irritating enough that I don't use it. But it's too big, I'd kill for a 5 inch smartphone.
