Incredible work from @tuneandfairweather.bsky.social right up to the outer packaging. Looking forward to getting stuck into this

A massive thanks to @frameratemerch.com for sending this exquisite piece of rug that will now adorn the space immediately in front of my gaming area forever.

Highly recommend them for all they do, top notch service from start to finish 😊

For several years now I've assembled a playlist of an album a day. No repeats, just listen to one album a day in order to keep broadening the horizons. Here is 2024 with bonus day for leap year. I also keep a singles list of new music I come across so that's also here. Links to follow 😊

Ethel Cain is ethereal and wistful on the Preacher's Daughter. Soccer Mommy lilts away about such relatable things on Color Theory. Lankum put such weight behind their doomy folk and bring a power unseen elsewhere. Turnstile bring all the energy on Glow On.

Inter Arma blaze their own trail and continue to grow and explore on New Heaven. Mutoid Man bring the riffs and fun in heavy music on Mutants. Ithaca rule on They Fear Us and it's a shame they're finishing up. Chat Pile are a nightmare made manifest and one that you cannot look away from.

Much like the video games, I also have a best of for the past five years in music. All in no order here's the best for me from 2020-2024.

Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers combine in boygenius but they are also exceptional in their own right. Both provided excellence in heaps.

Just a killer vibe and full of riffs from start to finish, Chat Pile's Cool World is my favourite album this year. Their brand of noise, now with a solid sprinkling of Korn amongst other peers, Cool World hits hard and fast on multiple levels.

I mentioned Cult of Luna with Julie Christmas and if you're looking for more of that vibe you should check out GUHTS Regeneration. Suitably epic and with a hint of dirge to it, the album roils along, crashing and bringing full weight to the music.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Sometimes you just need something straight and to the point to let the emotions flow and Kublai Khan is perfect for that.

You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To sees Knocked Loose coming to a peak in their careers. Heavy, with just enough melody in there that you can dance to it, the album urges the push play button as soon as it ends.

Most will recognize Julie Christmas from her stellar work with Cult of Luna on the Mariner. She's wicked in her own work too with this ripper of an album. An often repeated listen for me this year.

I don't listen to an awful lot of dance/electronica but Caribou routinely steals away listening time. On Honey it checks all my boxes for my brain that is still rooted in the late 90s, early 2000s era.

Not a bad film all told but the reason it'll stick and be worth the rewatch is for Trent & Atticus' score. Propulsive and thunderous, the Challengers soundtrack is a ride from start to finish.

Shapeshifter is such a fitting title for Oranssi Pazuzu's body of work and Muuntautuja reflects their comfort and control in how they approach their music. Bewitching and enthralling, it's one that will be returned to over and over again for new insights.

Weird and ever pushing forward in terms of their sound, Inter Arma continues to blow my mind on New Heaven. The soundscapes they create are unlike others and hit on levels other metal bands just cannot compare to. This is stellar.

Chelsea Wolfe continues to present the ephemeral and ethereal in her work with the excellent She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She. Sit back and be absorbed by her voice in all its splendor.

Moving on to music, if I am even a fraction of this good by the time I'm in my 70s then things have gone well.

Kim Gordon's The Collective kicks supreme amounts of ass.

Elden Ring brings freedom and a story that reveals itself in layers for hours and hours. There's always one more thing to check out and something of interest. It never wastes your time.

But Hades is number one for now. Every part of a game is here firing at maximum. It is a true joy to play.

Balatro sucks you in for that one more run that makes hours evaporate while you try to master it. Last of Us II combines a powerful narrative with excellent mechanics. Vampire Survivors is pure simple gameplay addiction. Alan Wake 2 is an ambitious multimedia effort that leaves you wanting more.
December 12, 2024 at 6:45 PM
Death's Door combined a brilliant soundtrack with compelling isometric action. Citizen Sleeper has a kickass soundtrack with deep contemplative RPG. Returnal has a great mechanical loop with sick music. And Like a Dragon has a wonderful story.

Also great music.

Post a PERFECT album from the 90s that isn’t Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

A true joy to play, Astro Bot captures the nostalgia for the PlayStation while packaging it in a platformer that stands up to the Marios. Every aspect of this is firing on all levels but it is the joy and fun of it all that reminds you of the power of games.
December 11, 2024 at 7:09 PM
Ingenious. Such a simple idea but the depth and the complexity that you can construct in Balatro is unparalleled this year. Fully deserving of all the plaudits and nominations, the 'just one more go' of it will keep you coming back for a really long time to come.

Sometimes you need a good puzzler to get the brain going. Rise of the Golden Idol provides brainteasers in spades all while adding an overarching plot that ties in and uses the knowledge you learn and can apply later. A worthy sequel and looking forward to any DLC they have planned.
