Today I am stepping down from my role as the CEO of #mastodon. Though this has been in the works for a while, I can't say I've fully processed how I feel about it. There is a bittersweet part to it, and I think I will miss it, but it also felt necessary. It feels like a goodbye, but it isn't—I […]

1. Out of curiosity, I went through the feeds of some habitual tuna tormentors. I found they’re big on:
- fox hunting
- Reform UK
- antagonism to asylum seekers.
In other words, the same few antisocial (psychopathic?) men, turning up in all the bad places.

Bluefin tuna are miraculously returning to UK shores – only to be tormented for ‘sport’ | George Monbiot
A tournament in Cornwall will pit anglers against these magnificent creatures, as part of a rising trend for so-called ‘sportfishing’, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

WTF? I was quoted in this story but I have never spoken to the reporter nor would I have said those things. Is everything just generated by LLMs these days?

By betraying his voters so comprehensively and so soon, Keir Starmer has done us a favour. He has given us 4 years to design the government we want.
In this week's column I explain how it can be done. There's massive
potential, but we need to start now. 🧵

We had a small leaky butt (bit like me really XD) but(t) it wasn't very effective.

These two larger butts are […]

4. So why is rainforest on high Dartmoor confined to a few tiny pockets, of which this fragment is the largest? Sheep.
Sheep selectively browse out tree seedlings, which are highly nutritious. So when the old trees die, there’s nothing to replace them. You can see the results inside Piles Copse.

3. In the absence of human intervention, much of the high ground on Dartmoor would likely be covered by temperate rainforest, to judge by hygrothermal mapping, conducted here by @guyshrubsole.bsky.social’s excellent initiative, The Lost Rainforests of Britain.

1. This is Piles Copse, the largest remaining fragment of high-ground temperate rainforest on Dartmoor. It’s a tiny speck of green in a dismal, human-made desert. Prepare yourselves for a story of breathtaking perversity, told in this thread. (There’s a one-page version at the bottom). 🧵
