WIP snippet E. Vanek - Hunter/Angel Had we been on the road a week? A month? A handful of days? Stars were just winking on the purpling night when the captive began to pray. He was still tied atop the horse, hooded face blocking the fading sun as they paced alongside me in my primeval hunter’s jog. I knew a prayer when I heard it. Even with the liquid French, the cadence was mother’s milk to me. I’d heard it way before the Order when I was a bitty thing, Daddy’s prayers droning on and on while my belly gnawed at my spine. I’d heard prayers while the whip fell and until babies stopped crying. In the Order, I’d heard prayers over and over as I writhed in pain, healing prayers but still that rhythm, the shouted prayers in formation with my brothers, the wailing prayers for Gideon’s funeral procession… On and on it went, memories of rhythmic Latin like holy ordnance exploding behind my eyes.

Ethan Vanek WIP snippet I continued to the chapel alone. This was a small stucco building facing west, toward the Citadel, with the sun and sword emblem atop a plain dome and a simple wooden entryway. I ducked in there to take off my pack, armor, outerwear, and boots. Strap sores broke and ran under my shirt as I undid all my careful work to get to the warded bag, which was so full it took up half my pack. Vague memories of jettisoning small items flitted through my mind, but then I had the distraction of ritual.

WIP Snip - E. Vanek After that, I kept my mind firmly in the animal thoughts of path and forest, sun and moon. I was a hunter and a damn good one, born and raised, so fucking act like it. Life became: move until you can’t, find shelter, rest, move again. A dance as familiar as swallowing. As I traveled south, I glimpsed more cleared land through thinning trees, roads widening and branching, and homestead colors multiplying on trail-posts. This was fast becoming settled country, which meant the big Rift had already claimed some lives. I wasn’t traveling toward some neophyte trial; this was serious. The pulsing, unholy hum was closer now, could feel it even when I wasn’t trying, a dark throb like a rotten molar. How long? How long had I felt evil in my own bones? I couldn’t remember a time without it.

This orchid is making me very happy currently. I bought it because it had that one flower (right) turned upside down! And then it bloomed again right side up!
