Romantasy hasn’t gotten its fangs into me quite yet but it has dealt a glancing blow. I’ve a weakness for all things dragon & I’m at peace w it. As I’m reviewing these months later, I can say I kept going w the series. Part stubborn nature- part, “let’s see where this goes.”

I read The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods earlier this year as part of a group read. I think I fell in love with the premise of this book more so than the actual book. I loved so many pieces of the story, I just wanted more from each piece.

#TheBookEaters by Sunyi Dean was a mixed read for me earlier this year. I picked it up on a whim; I’m a sucker for books about books. A dark fantasy/dystopian/family drama/ horror about an alien race that devours books? Yes, please. It’s certainly a read that sticks with you.

The Witcher: The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski

So I broke a cardinal rule; I played the game and watched the series before reading the book(s). But I actually don’t mind it, it’s kind of helped keep me hooked into the books, having those references.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

First book of the year (read in January). It sat on my shelf for a while bc most reviews mentioned big time world building &I wasn’t ready. It’s a complex world & you’re thrown into the thick of it but I enjoyed it SO much.

Also, really good reps here of realistic emotions in the face of loss, stress, etc. It’s not all stiff upper lips & dashing heroics. It’s being beaten down by daily struggle so it numbs you to the magic or the connections around you. It adds an unforgettable element to the gothic tension build.

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow

Give me a gothic, decaying manor & I’m a happy girl, apparently. I love the atmosphere of the book & how Harrow uses familiar gothic lit devices (the manor, the fated quest) while putting an interesting spin on it. (Cont.)

I enjoyed this book. A quick, solid three star read for me. I do have a penchant for unreliable narrators so this scratched that itch on a couple fronts.

The Crash by Frieda McFadden

My 1st audiobook; not my first attempt at audiobooks but the first time I’ve finished one. Don’t worry, while you might find me sniffing physical books for a dopamine hit, I’m not an audiobook opposer. I just can’t “see” them as well if that makes sense.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

I’ve been on a fantasy kick & I’ve loved it. Still, I was yearning for a good historical fiction to dive into & this scratched that itch for me.

It’s a great read; plunging you into the terrible beauty of grief, the Alaskan wilderness, and love.

Def feel the same as far as Booksky being so much less toxic than BookTok felt. I hope it continues in that vein. It’ll be fun to see how the community takes shape on both platforms (Bluesky/Tome)

I feel like it might be a front. Luring us into a false sense of security and then he hits when we least expect it.
