it's a small account. a joke for friends. when it randomly gets traction & escapes its target audience, it suddenly gets all sorts of "intent" ascribed to it & goes from being "a joke" to "bait". like if you saw that Tweet on your TL & it had 9 likes would you go off about "intended reaction"?

Oddly I think this level of lifestyle racism tends to be something you only see from people without a single Southern ancestor

I very clearly never said "surely" anything. We can't know without a doubt that she's under duress; we can't know without a doubt that she is not under duress. Not a very ambitious claim, but you're welcome to feelings of moral certainty—I know some people need them in order to support liberation

What racist beliefs do I have a about Hamas and Palestinians? That they are capable of employing hostage-taking as a revolutionary tactic in an intelligent way?
October 25, 2023 at 5:22 PM
Stockholm syndrome doesn't exist. But choosing your words because your husband is being held as a hostage does! Obviously can't know that that's happening but it is a distinct possibility that people only seem to be ruling out if they have a predisposition towards certain narrative elements

I didn't pick that goalpost; that was OP's original goalpost, which you can scroll up and see. I recognise that it isn't yours to defend, and maybe you have no inclination to do so!

You're more than welcome to assign a 0-probability to any strategic pressure re: her words, but it's not editorially negligent to headline an article with "I went through hell" if the story involves an 85 year old woman also using the words "they beat me with sticks"
October 25, 2023 at 12:36 AM
Better things to do than employ extremely simple and effective strategies to engage global public opinion during the most widely publicised hostage-taking since 1979?

OK

Ask yourself why you doubt their smart use of a proven revolutionary tactic

of what
October 24, 2023 at 11:06 PM
The only conclusion I drew is that because her husband's well-being is currently in other people's hands, and she is currently speaking about those people, dynamics exist such that we can neither confidently believe, nor confidently affirm, the veracity of her account.
October 24, 2023 at 10:33 PM
If you think hostage-taking isn't strategic political theater to influence public perception, you underestimate it as a revolutionary tactic; I highly recommend reading anti colonialist scholar/Algerial liberation fighter Eqbal Ahmad's writings on hostage-taking as revolutionary PR strategy.

Agreed! Acknowledging that what she is saying may be influenced by external force is not dismissal; it's a decision not to draw a conclusion, & is certainly a safer bet than drawing the conclusion that what she's saying is uninfluenced by the fact that her husband is still being held as collateral
October 24, 2023 at 10:08 PM
who said the word "boost"?

The literal point of hostage-taking is to present a set of demands with leverage, and to make strategic decisions related to the hostages that influence public perception, both hostile & sympathetic. How a group Relates to the Public is.... "𝒫𝓊𝒷𝓁𝒾𝒸 𝑅𝑒𝓁𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃𝓈"
October 24, 2023 at 10:04 PM
Maybe she is! Maybe she isn't! Maybe she has agency, and maybe she doesn't. We literally can't know because the life of her husband is currently 100% in the hands of her former captors.
October 24, 2023 at 10:00 PM
I don't know! I'm several thousand kilometers away. But it is a possibility, because the entire strategy of hostage-taking is only effective because it provides a high-attention forum for PR. That's the literal point of hostage-taking.
October 24, 2023 at 9:57 PM
Agreed! Doesn't change the fact that her husband's life being in her former captors' hands fundamentally compromises her account of the experience.
October 24, 2023 at 9:51 PM
If you believe for 1 second that nothing about her post-release behavior is being coerced then you have 0 faith that the hostage-takers have even the most basic strategic competency
October 24, 2023 at 9:49 PM
I think that numbers-wise this is like literally the luckiest fiddler crab to ever live
October 13, 2023 at 5:36 PM
Bibi has what they accuse Hamas of having—a death wish, in that the suffering of his own people only serves to justify harming on behalf of his own people, necessitating further justification by further suffering. I think Israel might not exist after this. I'm 100% sure Palestine won't.
October 13, 2023 at 3:12 PM
They also ~knew~ Hamas would order civilians to stay in place. So now all their actual reasons for not relocating—i.e. that it's impossible—can be waved away as Hamas's fault for telling them to be human shields.
