A combination of a high-gain amplifier and a filter is an experimental studio staple. The Rhode Und Schwarz UBM filter has a unique shape, similar to a resonant highpass. Combined with raging feedback, it offers a wide range of tones, from resonant plink-plunks to proper tube mayhem.

I just started writing a casual, irregular editorial series, where I'll be sharing thoughts on all things sound, Felt, design, and everything the random signal generator that's apparently built into my brain spits out. https://www.feltinstruments.com/editorial/embracing-the-old-way-of-working

Felt Instruments is six! On September 5th, we celebrated a triple birthday—mine, my daughter’s, and Felt’s. Yes, for some reason, all these birthdays happened on the same day, as if by magic. I know it’s my birthday, but if I may have one wish for you—it’s that you find many happy discoveries.

The entire demo track I wrote for Kolor was recorded with the Neumann MT-48 audio interface. Usually record with rather obscure vintage equipment, but I wanted to see how much vibe I could inject into these ultra-clean preamps using Kolor. To me, the results are stunning.

Absolutely beautiful filth. And that's just a fraction of it. Coming to your studio later this year.

I'm excited to announce that Kolor, the Felt Instruments EQ is coming out next Tuesday, June 24th!

This #klangfilm RZ062b tube equalizer is one of the devices I reach for first when recording for Felt. There's something magical about the tone of its preamp and tilt sectons. Kolor, the Felt Instruments EQ is coming out later this month. Klangfilm tilt and preamp included.

Completely overbuilt using the best components available, this device was made for the Soviet movie industry by KINAP between 1949 and 1952. Less than 40 were made. I began to realize that this upcoming EQ plugin places half of my studio in your DAW. I think it's a good thing.

Some people believe circuits like this can be approximated mathematically. There's been a lot of marketing and hype surrounding this way of making plugins, and it's become a de-facto standard approach. To me, purely algorithmic plugins never sound as good as the real thing.

According to a plate on the back, only 61 units of this tube EQ were made, somewhere in the 1950s Poland. As far as I know, this is the only one left. The design is clearly inspired by the iconic Klangfilm equalizer, with big, beautiful top and bottom shelves. Coming to your DAW soon!

I'm happy to let you know that from now on, downloading, installing and updating the plugins will now be handled by the Felt Instruments Installer. The app is designed to make the entire process as easy and non-technical as possible. Grab it at https://www.feltinstruments.com/install

I'm really proud about how this is turning out. It's still a work in progress but the balance feels very right to me.

If this isn't the most beautiful frequency crossover diagram, I don't know what is.

When most of us think of filters, we think about Moogs and creative tone shaping. Some filters were designed for #mixing and #mastering. This set of filters comes from the 1950s, and will be a part of the upcoming Felt EQ. Cutting at 40Hz with these gives me the best bass punch I've ever heard.

Smugi version 1.5 is out now, bringing improved feedback behaviour, more flexibility to the sequencer and much improved graphics performance, along with some bug fixes. As always, the update is free for everyone who owns the plugin - just open Pulse and grab it.

The synth has scorched my brain. I'll take this as an opportunity to finish some plugin ideas that have been collecting dust for too long now. Stay tuned!
