Last summer getting masks on both these boys was a struggle, if not impossible. They were NOT fans of having things covering their adorable little faces! Got them on yesterday and it took some time but FAS was minimal and flies are out of the eyes 🪰

Today I learned that on Chewy you can select clicker training as your discipline with your horse. Good job, Chewy 💓🦄

The horse who changed everything for me. 💓

If you're spending much of your time with horse perfecting things, you're missing out on so much fun and joy- don't get me wrong, having healthy goals is totally fine but don't forget to also simply enjoy your horse.

Managing a track system for turnout is all fun and games until the blanketed horse realized his immunity in the bitter winter. Thankfully I'm a clicker trainer, creativity is a practiced skill 😅
Florescent yellow/green traffic cone with a yellow driveway marker through the hole. Two strands of white electric tape wrap around the pole coming through the top of the come and another midway down the cone. There's blue tape (for extra visibility for the horses) securing everything to the cone as well as a piece of plain metal wire attaching the two strands of tape, briding them together and bulging out a bit to deter horses from tipping cones to get into the pasture.

If you’re looking for a companion with a sharp mind, sensitive side, and SO much "try," Hotshot is your guy! Hotshot may not be the cuddliest of welsh ponies, but if you earn his trust, you'll find him asking for a deep wither scratch and nickering the second he spots you. Training Highlights: • Liberty leading- Following behind or at your side with or without a fenceline. • Lunging via reverse roundpen- Walk, trot, and canter on verbal cues around a circle barrier. • Bucket stationing- Verbal cue "bucket" to send him off to a nearby bucket. • Targeting- Hand and handheld targets, following and stationary. • Haltering- Hotshot doesn't like being approached and having his halter thrown on quickly and sloppily but he's happy to halter himself if you take his pace. Improving Hotshot's comfortability with handling and trailer loading will take someone gentle, kind, and patient. ❤️‍🩹 • Hotshot has spent a lot of time exploring trailer loading but has reservations about getting his hind feet up and in. • He has had a successful vet visit under sedation and did well. • Hotshot's comfortable with grooming over most of his body while relaxing by his pasture-mates or over a hay net, and will even lean in if you find an itchy spot! But he has concerns about leg and hoof handling and will need continued support to help him overcome his fears. Despite being in his late teens, Hotshot is a bit of a social butterfly and mingles with everyone. He currently lives with two other geldings and an in tact jack- at times he's rough housing with the youngest of the group and other times he's sunbathing alongside his older donkey pal. 🥰 Note: Hotshot has EMS and will do best with a lifestyle that manages his sugar levels. (Low NSC and/or soaked hay, ideally little to no pasture, muzzling, and carefully choosing any additional feeds or supplements.) This morning I cry over my coffee, The mug warming my hands, and tears warming my cheeks. The life I live is at risk, as is the life of those I love. Yesterday a horse was stripped unjustly From a home where he was finally seen, Heard, respected, honored, and most importantly, Valued. Not for what he could be, but for who he was, Exactly as he was; Unconditionally. Something we all deserve. The life I live is at risk, as is the life of those I love. Clouds are to be replaced by smog, A humans attention to detail, careful craftsmanship, And traditions past down through generations, Overshadowed by jumbled wires, and flashy screens, Technology taking over our authenticity. Farm fields once lush with produce to feed the world, Now decaying as their caretakers are forced out of their homes, Dehumanized for the color of their skin and their origin. Families torn apart in the name of safety. Closets are being packed full, their doors struggling to latch shut, As once proud people step back into hiding, scared again. They no longer hold hands in public, "just friends." The life I live is at risk, as is the life of those I love; Everyone. -csk

Heart of Phoenix is set to remove a horse from one of their fosters who's spent 200+ hours and over $15k on his care and training, with an extensive care team and loving foster who even offered to adopt or buy him upon their decision to remove him, this is a huge disservice to the horse. (Cont.)
I'm reaching out to encourage HoP to reconsider moving Swagger from his current home with Ivy where he is comfortable, safe, well-cared for, loved, and supported by an extensive team of professionals willing to prioritize his emotional well-being to help him overcome his fears and traumas. I deeply appreciate HoP's general concern for Swaggers overall health, extending to physical, emotional, and mental components- the worry over Swagger not receiving appropriate care makes sense, but what we see in Ivy's countless documented hours of care and training is a horse who is healthy all around. With Ivy opting to take a positive reinforcement based approach and having a deep care for his emotional state, the pace at which training is taking place is completely appropriate. Horses like him are unique behavioral cases that sometimes do require a large amount of time. Steph K Equestrian has reached out offering support, I understand that this offer was declined but I strongly urge you to read the stories of their rescues- those of which are also serious behavioral cases like Swagger. This rescue has also began a petition that covers our collective concerns as a community who loves horses & encourages organizations, especially rescues, to do better. While on a smaller scale as a trainer who fosters horses from local rescues each year, I've followed a similar path to Ivy's; helping unhandled horses become bold and confident training partners who feel safe and comfortable, trusting us as their caretakers. Swagger reminds me of a foster who I hold dearly to my heart, a horse who couldn't be handled in handling practices that feel like routine to most equestrians- things as simple as putting on a halter or lifting a hoof for trimming. Said foster was surrendered after 18 years in the same home, this upheaval of his happy life is believed to be the main cause of his trauma & handling difficulties, having no issues with care or handling prior to arriving at the rescue. While each horse is an individual and Swagger's personal response to a drastic change may vary (such as moving onto a new foster home, away from Ivy and the companions he shares through the fence, or into a force-based trainers care) is likely to set him back and undo a lot of the hard work he and Ivy have already done. Ivy's thoughtful planning, and careful guidance from Michelle Martiya (also a phenomenal trainer) is what brought Swagger to where he is today- a horse on the track to being able to be not only handled with ease but to also be a willing and active participant in his routine care. Denying Swagger the ability to remain in his home with a person he's developed a strong trust and bond with is not in his best interest and as a behavior professional, animal welfare advocate, and someone who works closely with rescues, I simply can't understand why you would choose to turn away a perfectly good home for a horse like Swagger, who would be difficult to place especially prior to Ivy's 200+ training hours and several thousands of dollars into his care, when you have several others in your care that need to be prioritized- and countless waiting for rescues to have space for them. Ivy has proven herself more than worthy and capable of providing for Swagger and their connection is apparent. I strongly advocate against the removal of Swagger from his comfort and safety with Ivy- or at the very least, allowing additional time for Ivy to say goodbye and prepare Swagger for his move and consider options that would carry on with his trauma-informed and R+ based training.
