Don't know where it's from but, "hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue". I always liked that. A hypocrite knows at least how he should act and might be shamed into doing the right thing. Naked vice is much worse.

Something that probably should be conventional wisdom by now is that there are quite a lot of people who will lie outrageously for attention, clout, self-aggrandizement, any kind of reason and in insular online communities those lies really can have legs.

Balkan has nothing to do with it. War deaths don't count, Balkan countries have small populations and homicide rates of around 2-3 at the time. The reason is Russia. It counts as Europe in the data, has a large population and, at that time, a homicide rate of almost 30.

I was surprised that the homicide rate was so high in Europe in 2000. The reason for this appears to be almost entirely that Russia counts as Europe in the data and used to have a homicide rate of almost 30. Most of the EU countries had a homicide rate of 1 or 2 even then.

What's the purpose of moderation beyond basic legal requirements for a platform like bluesky if not to make the site usable for a broad variety of people, and how does letting a small maladjusted minority create a genuinely menacing environment for people they don't like serve that purpose?

That's just not served by letting small minorities of maladjusted people create genuinely menacing environments for anyone they don't like and telling everyone who's uncomfortable with that to just leave. That defeats the purpose of moderation.

I don't think anyone is missing this blatantly obvious point. But the question is, what are the purposes of moderation beyond just satisfying legal requirements. From the pov of a platform like bluesky, one purpose has to be to make this site usable for a broad variety of people.

He's not questioning the reality of trans people, he's questioning the evidence base of youth gender medicine. Please try to understand the difference, it's not that hard.

That's specifically about the apparent disproportional numbers of supercentenarians in specific regions, such as Sardinia. Tiny populations that never really nudged overall life expectancy stats one way or another.
