Two digital illustrations I made back in 2020, inspired by the story of Waitaiki, the mother of pounamu (Aotearoa New Zealand greenstone).
"Tamāhua Pursues Poutini," Digital Illustration. The work is split vertically into two parts. The top half depicts Tamāhua scanning the horizon in search of Waitaki, his wife, and Poutini, the taniwha who kidnapped her. The bottom half depicts Poutini grasping Waitaki as he swims away from Tamāhua. The two halves are divided by a row of six different stones: (from left to right) obsidian, basalt, argillite, flint, bowenite, greenstone. "Waitaiki, Turned to Stone" Digital Illustration. Depicts Waitaiki in the river bed, her final resting place, after being changed into Poutini's essence - pounamu (greenstone).
