Roman Salute eh? (Also known as the Fascist Salute)

This attempt at rebranding from fascists is both really bad and really lazy. People who know anything about Romans know that this was not used by Romans, and was instead adopted by Benito Mussolini, a fascist.

I got my Jade Plant to bloom this winter. For those of you who live in tropical environments that don’t get below 0 C, this happens annually for you. However for those of us that live in wintry environments, it’s hard to get this right.

This feels like a bigger accomplishment than college.

What is wrong with her?

My dog, Sophie, who is a black and white cocker spaniel with an attitude. She wanders the hallways of this house like she owns them, guarding for the misplaced items like toys that aren’t in their proper spots, and awaiting her 6 pm treat after her pill that alleviates her itch. She knows she’s the queen, and being in her mid 80s in dog years brings her more sympathies. But as with all monarchs her paranoia for that power continues to spiral and causes her to tick. Growing fear for even the smallest infraction, and disappointment the moment she stops receiving her beloved ear rubs. This on top of the fact that she can no longer hear. Her floppy facial features brought downsides that she could never control. But she barks still to keep authority, the illusion of control in a spiralling world of puppy osteoporosis and back warts. Sophie’s longtime mentor Luna, another black and white cocker spaniel passed away this morning. She now is the oldest spaniel in the family. The little social interaction she gets with other dogs is mostly an expression of her distaste for for others of the breed. Luna she tolerated. What Luna was to adventure and spirit, Sophie is to what it means to be pampered and be full of a certain level of disdain. And yet, Sophie continues. We as a family ask what is wrong with her but we knew this deep seeded angst existed when we first spotted her. She was distracted by beetles and the odd placement of a water dish at the side of her pen with her siblings. While all of the other puppies leaped in excitement to see us, Sophie wandered aimlessly away from us as if we were mere objects that served her, instead complaining about the hotness of that particular summer day. And that oddness we knew when we brought her home and she chased butterflies and had the luxury to be a picky eater. We, in effect created this monster, and we deal with her consequences every single day. And that’s why we love her, because she is just as weird as the rest of us.
