and the actual structures aren't driving the value - it's land and the deliberately obtuse planning system

Looks to be working, didn't realise but they seem to have out-performed similar European countries over that timeframe.

How dare you do things that don't immediately make sense, even though you explain them? You're clearly a western elitist colonizer emotionless fraudster.

This isn't natural. This isn't organic. This is as much an industrial process as any of the 'fake' substitutes, and it's really naive to say otherwise and pretend that the cows we use are a pristine, untarnished part of nature.

definitely not me when someone brings up SBF in a conversation on EA

So, I'd argue that they aren't actually misguided, just willing to take on small-probability chances more than others. It is a core idea in EA that neglected problems will seem weird to others (like investment opportunities-this was Microsoft in 1978-this doesn't scream trillion-dollar opportunity)

Most EAs think that we should spend most of our charitable money and focus on present day issues, but think that these low-probability events are more neglected, so would argue that they should focus on these with the little money and resources the EA community has. With more, as this graph shows...

9/10 That's not nothing, but it is vanishingly small compared to the stuff that we spend money on, like this Oral-B AI-powered electric toothbrush, on 'sale' at about $115 USD equivalent. Is getting your teeth shining a bit more really worthwhile, when you could use the money to save a year of life?

6/11 This disparity means that it's possible to someone in the top 1% to make a huge difference to the life of a member of the bottom 1%, with only a tiny fraction of their income, as this illustrates. Someone would have died that could have been saved with this tiny fraction of your income.

3/11 If we line this up, you'll see what the global income distribution looks like. Westerners aren't slightly better off than most people - we're much better off, and before you comment this has already adjusted for differences in cost of living by using PPP.

2/11 First, some background will probably help - you're a lot wealthier than you probably think, compared to the world average - as this awesome graphic shows, an income of $19K would put you in the top 15% of world income, and $89K would put you in the top 1%, or first out of a group of 100.

and the only things that go on actual discount had such high margins that they'd never be worth buying
*cough, cough oral b AI toothbrushes*
