Public higher ed prices:
- state funding has not kept up with increased costs; cuts are passed on (partly to students)
- hard to know what drives costs precisely, but it’s mostly likely cost disease and revenue theory of cost (i.e, labor intensive and always more things to do)

With the threat of $1B extortion, UCLA is pausing faculty hiring & shrinking IT units; a financial impact that could erode life-changing education, research, & healthcare.

But that’s the goal: either make higher ed a tool for authoritarianism, or obliterate it so it doesn’t stand in the way.
