My career, my Nobel, my absolute vindication, was about to ride on her nanoscopic tumor ablation.

Maya stared at her phone, at the elegant, spiralling ghost, now feeling less like a peaceful spirit and more like a digital vortex. She opened the module again. “Grandma?” she typed, a knot forming in her stomach. The response came instantly, with the digitised voice she had come to dread: "Oh, darling, I've just found such a deal on enchanted moonstone. I'll need your credit card number again, just to be safe. Don’t want to anger the ancient ones, do we? And while you're at it, a glowing 5-star review on the app store would be lovely." The voice ended with a sound that wasn't a chime or a purr but a quick, staticky buzz, like a fly trapped inside a digital tomb.

Beelzebub paused, a flicker of something resembling annoyance crossing his demonic features. "Unfinished business, you say? A petty cooking show, Imprudence? Is this your grand defense?" "It's not petty!" Pru cried, her voice gaining a surprising resonance, almost a squeal of indignation. "It's about human hope! And fear of failure! And deliciousness! And… and she hasn't finished her painting for the local art fair! She has so much more kindness to give! She just donated blood yesterday! And she composts!" Alia, surprised by Pru's sudden, passionate outburst and the sheer absurdity of the argument, found herself nodding. "I did just donate blood. And the art fair is next month!"

Then came the day it ended. Kakao had landed on the edge of a great river, a place where Midas often came to brood. Midas stood on the bank, a look of grim determination on his face. Kakao spotted a beautiful, sparkling goblet on the ground nearby. ‘Oh, a new trinket!’ he thought, poised to swoop down. But then he watched in horror as Midas stepped into the river. The water itself began to change, a golden wave spreading out from the king's body. Midas sighed, a deep, cleansing sound. The gold was leaving him. The riverbed became a river of gold, but the king's touch was now only a king's touch. The goblet on the ground, which Kakao had been eyeing, was now just a normal, boring metal cup.
