an interesting perspective and more logical for an American where autarky could be achieved, albeit at a cost. As someone from the Netherlands, who have always depended on trade for wealth and sustenance, I'm less afraid of relying on others.

I appreciate the open question. Tariffs raise prices and hurt the economy by disrupting efficient trade. When countries specialize in what they do best, everyone benefits from cheaper goods & more wealth, even with trade deficits. Look into Ricardo’s comparative advantage or Krugman’s work on trade.

it's trump in a nutshell. everyone gets tariffs except Australia because they have a trade deficit with the US.

Now show this as a percentage of former total trade with Russia and you will see that the sanctions work (this is less than 5% of former trade). Of course sanctions are never 100% airtight but trading via third countries still significantly increases cost for Russia.
