For WIP Wednesday, from The Tremble-Tree, here’s Dorothea dealing with some big problems. (This is an AU where instead of getting recruited to the opera as a child, she’s recruited to be a servant-spy of House Vestra.)
“We have to find out more. It’s the only way to save Edie.” She looked around. “Where’s Hubie?” A terrified silence fell over the sunset-drenched platform. Dorothea’s face set. “I’m going to go check.” She found him in what she recognized as a Vestra sorcery lab; she’d had to scrub the floor of one once after an experiment gone wrong. He was screaming and hurling spells at the door, which fizzled out on contact; the labs were designed to contain magical catastrophes if necessary. And Hubert was a catastrophe. He’d been beaten. His hair was singed and pointed every which way. His eyes were bloodshot and his knuckles were raw.

For WIP Wednesday, here's Edelgard returning to Enbarr from her three years away in Faerghus in my WIP The Tremble-Tree... surely nothing bad will happen to her now
When she got back to the palace, the first of her family to see her on her way to her long-missed bedroom was her brother Franz, who kissed her on the cheek and told her there would be a family dinner with Father and all of the children to celebrate her return. “Tell Father that Hubert is coming too,” Edelgard told Franz, a command rather than a question. Edelgard stepped into her room with all of its treasures, so different from the bare stone house in Faerghus where she’d spent the past three years. There was the portrait of her mother over the mantel. There was the stuffed cat toy on the bed that Uncle Volkhard had given her as a baby. There were the pegasus and pegasus knight figurines that she’d once told Father she wanted for her birthday, but she’d really wanted them so that Hubert could play with them and pretend it was her idea.

I finally have something to share for #wipwednesday.

My WIP The Tremble-Tree includes, among other things, what I think Ferdinand and Dorothea's support chain should have been.
“You ought to take him to court!” Ferdinand said in a sudden passion. “Nobles cannot simply abandon their children like this! It’s an outrage!” Dorothea snorted. “I’ve heard you introduced at your fancy parties, you know. When I drop in on your life. I hear you introduced as ‘the legitimate heir to House Aegir.’ You know why they say that, don’t you? Because illegitimate children don’t have a right to anything.” Ferdinand said something about her father not behaving as a nobleman should, something responsibility, something honor. But then the flow of words stopped, and she looked up from the towels to really look at him. There were tears shimmering in his eyes. “I did not know that people do such terrible things. I thought only the villains in my books did such things.” And Dorothea could feel it was true. Everything cruel about the world that she had to accept by the age of five, he was facing only now. Without her, would he ever have known?

I’m not a big AU person because I really like the Fódlan setting. But in my AU Coven, we’re still in Fódlan but it’s vaguely Victorian instead of vaguely medieval, and the magic works differently (but Crests are still a thing.) I do mean to finish it one day

It's WIP Wednesday! From my WIP, The Tremble-Tree, here's a very normal crafting circle with Bernie, Dorothea, and Edelgard.
She sketched, and sometimes she looked up to watch Dorothea and Edelgard sew. Several times she saw a silver flash that wasn’t the point of a needle, and curiosity got the better of her eventually. “What are you sewing?” she said, so quietly she half-hoped neither girl would hear her. Dorothea held up her needle in one hand and in the other, something that looked like a tiny chisel. “I’m sewing coins and lockpicks into the hem of a skirt.” “Me too,” said Edelgard. “Whuh? Why?” said Bernie, astonished. “Because then,” said Dorothea, folding her next bit of hem around the lockpick, “You have money and a way out that nobody knows about.” Bernie sat at her desk, stunned. She wished she had a way out that nobody knew about. Dorothea was the most interesting girl in the world.

For WIP Wednesday, a sad pre-canon Edelgard moment from my Black Eagles gen fic The Tremble-Tree:
When Uncle told her she had to leave because it wasn’t safe, El said, “But what about my brothers and sisters? What about Hubert?” Uncle knelt to bring himself to her eye level. El loved that about her Uncle Volkhard: he always tried to make the differences between them feel as small as he could. “My dear Edelgard. It is so kind of you to think of your siblings’ safety. But you are in more danger than they are. You bear the Crest of Seiros, and none of your father’s enemies have forgotten how much he favored your mother. They know they can use you to control him.” El’s eyes filled with tears. Did that mean that Father didn’t love her siblings as much as he loved her, just because of her mother and her Crest? That wasn’t fair! She sniffled. “But what about Hubert? He wouldn’t want to leave me alone, I know he wouldn’t!” Uncle sighed. “Edelgard, you do have such a kind heart, which is why it pains my own heart to tell you this: Marquis Vestra is one of the leaders of this coup. Even at such a young age, his son has been trained in spycraft. He could report your location back to—”

For WIP Wednesday, here’s Dorothea and Hubert friendship, from the Black Eagles gen adventure I’m picking up once again after sitting in my WIP drawer for months:
Beyond the fence, women in breastplates, helmets, and skirts led pegasi on reins. Dorothea stared. She had seen pegasi fly high overhead, but had never seen one so close. And the knights! “But women can’t be knights,” Dorothea said in a rush. She had seen knights before, in the streets of Enbarr on their fine horses, and they were always men. “Pegasus knights are always women,” said Hubert. “It is said that pegasi are beloved of Saint Cethleann, and only bear riders who share her image.” Dorothea stared at the pegasus knights as the older ones taught the younger how to mount their steeds. They were so beautiful, but Dorothea didn’t envy their job one bit. All she really wanted was safety, and their job wasn’t safe.
