Crossed a special border earlier today: The Azerbaijan–Georgia land border, completely closed to anyone except for foreigners leaving Azerbaijan (and truck drivers)
The experience on both the AZ and the GE side was unexpectedly smooth, with multiple officers available to pedestrians immediately

Meanwhile I'm spending the night on a classic platskart car, which ADY proudly modernized before the train was put back into operation in early 2025, by adding blackout curtains, WiFi and some other minor upgrades.

… at least until those things on the opposite side of the platform start running to Tbilisi (as they've excitingly apparently done recently on some trial runs)

First time on an Azerbaijani night train 🥰
(Photo taken with staff permission to be safe ^^)
The closest thing here to an international night train …

Yeah, especially since they did heavily customize the pids which are much more often used as they come with maybe just a logo added

Just checked, apparently the Georgian Kiss Eurasia I rode in 2023 had those seat covers too (unlike the Azerbaijani ones those ones are at least serving Kutaisi airport station now)

The ones on the far right – will try to find a closeup (ÖBB are in the process of getting rid of all of them and replacing them with a digital kiosk btw)

I would love to know what went into the design decision to exclusively put planes on all the seat covers
Also I just witnessed an actual (regular) police officer asking someone not to sit on the stairs – there are two conductors and one police officer on this four-car double-decker train

The rail system is postsoviet, the trains are european, but the schedule is somehow American: There are 15 departures per direction+day on this line, but none between 10:40 and 16:40
(The number of departures is the same on weekends – not very American – but the service gap is somehow even longer)

I guess it says a lot about this country that despite the fact that the train I'm on right is quite crowded and lots of people are standing on the stairs, none of them dare *sitting* on the stairs, despite the ride taking almost an hour

Also sadly that's the average bus stop next to a bike lane arrangement here 🫣

In love with how plain and clean this pedestrian area is – no signs, no lampposts or any other excessive visual clutter
(Other parts of the pedestrian area including the one right behind me have benches and trees which is, of course, Good)

This newer station here actually has four escalators, but juding by the lighting still only two of them are used (right now only one since it's the end of the service day)

I expected there to be announcements regarding the train's destination at the main interchange station where the Green and Red line split, but there were none – I then took my chances and ended up on the wrong branch, from where I'll now take a train back to the interchange station

I find it amazing that despite those eight touchscreens across the train, plus scrolling text and LED line maps above every door, the only information provided regarding the actual train is its next/current stop and all its _previous_ stops – no info *at all* about which branch it will take
