it feels like the captaincy resentment kicked in last season when his performance dropped a bit (for all the reasons we discussed!). Don't remember this discussion before 24-25, and he was named captain ahead of the 22-23 season, which makes matters worse.

Exactly, this is where I really struggle with it all. We could never see any of the alternatives remotely close to his output, be it goals & assists, be it progression through passes and carries for the team. Then, add the whole captaincy discourse on top of it... and it's a sad state of affairs.

Thanks, I sort of land there too. It was already bad last season (without proper consideration for his injury problems or those of the players around him), but something seems to have turned worse this season after Eze came in. 70 million pounds worth of frustration placed on the wrong player.

What do you make of this? Psychosis aside, even the most level-headed Arsenal fans (& fan media) have been beating that drum all season, and when you make a data argument, they say that it's "just a pointer" as if there is something mystical that whoever disagrees can't see. Why/how did we get here?
February 4, 2026 at 6:06 PM
The 1st post said "Arsenal attackers are struggling" then followed by using stats unfiltered by 90s or context. This can lead to unwarranted conclusions, so I politely disagree with you. While it may be a quirk of stats-minded people, as you said, I expect more from a stats-oriented account.

The account putting this stuff out there knows data pretty well and how to present it properly. It was posted as a tell all fact about the attack, but the comparisons are not meaningful when the minutes are so different across players. Context really matters! Bad data use is worse than no data use.

Really great episode guys. You’re burying the lead by not giving more light to the discussion on the PL development outside of the top teams and what that implies for the league, it was quite insightful and refreshing given the constant complaints about the state of play. More of this, please!

If you create 2.07 XG and allow nothing to the opponent, you’ve done something well. However, this was poor in terms of intensity, we had no flow and we were off on our aggression as well. So many duels lost.

This is very much the Brazilian way. no matter the club or the level. A coach can be fired at any time if the vibes are slightly off. I've seen my club fire its coach, hire a new one, fire the new one, rehire the old one, all in the space of 10 days (back in 2007, a formative experience in some way)

But not obvious he’d be playing elsewhere either. Ex: city’s echeverri (similar profile and age group, big prospect) was moved to Girona from Leverkusen for more minutes. Arsenal doesn’t control the outcome of a loan, so maybe he’s better off training with the group for now. Not forever, but for now

EBL follows the school of thought where the authors say “data is a pointer”, but then go on to make arguments which are completely unsubstantiated by any observable metric. Behind a paywall of course. These authors also like to have the final word on any topic, and somehow it changes every week. 🥱

I know. Just venting.

Wonder whether eze will get the treatment that odegaard got last week when he at least did something. Terrible performance from the 27yo’s that cost a lot of money to the club. Turns out our balance is even worse without odegaard, who knew.

It's really hard to understand, honestly, and what makes it worse is that at times it is presented as some high-level tactical nous that mere mortals don't see. seems + like a sad byproduct of overanalyzing every single element of every game and then fitting them into an overarching narrative
December 9, 2025 at 8:10 PM
Felt a bit off. Emotions are high, but it did feel like priors on some players shaped the analysis. 1 example: On MØ, the data doesn’t immediately back the “redundancy” point, yet it got a long segment and was treated as obvious. Seems like one bad game is enough to pin blame and reignite discourse.

I agree with everything up to the end. There haven’t been many wasted opps to go in behind them (their def line isn’t not as high as it used to be), but yes our spaces are really wrong. We are very stretched. Multiple times we’ve had attackers running into our back line, not a usual sight this year.
December 6, 2025 at 1:27 PM
Well, don’t disagree there, merino has been bad and eze hasn’t been much better, but this has not been a game with a lot of space in behind their defense. If anything, they are the ones constantly exposing us with long balls.

Hahaha this is so dumb that it’s laughable. The Portuguese broadcast didn’t give any much thought about that moment. Honestly, happy to have watched with a bit more neutral commentators this week. The purring over sunderland before the break was tough to endure… thanks anyway!

Did he say that during the game or directly to Mikel in the pre match??

That’s not an accurate translation from the CBF statement.

It mentions the adductor muscle in right thigh, but that’s it.

He’d be sent if the VAR thought that the decision could be reversed, not to merely check it. Here, the linesman made the decision on the pitch, and there’s no clear grounds to review it: AR is on the path of the ball and ducks, allowing the linesman to make the call. Weird, but who knows anymore?
November 9, 2025 at 5:22 PM
How come warnock wants that as a foul but dismisses entirely the elbow to merino’s head? This is beyond any reasonable explanation.

More cuts to the head of arsenal players than minutes of football.

Muscular issue, per Arteta in the post match interview :/
November 1, 2025 at 5:21 PM
I am 100% with you. If only we had moments to ask the manager about his views on football… then we could get a glimpse of what he thinks about this. Unfortunate that no one has thought about that 😅.
