...the question I'd ask is "Why not Lowdon in the first place?". Her c.v. was better than Gale's for HC. The story at the time was "the players like him". Does that suggest her relationship with the squad isn't great? Lowdon's still there, so if Ken was canned...why not?

HAD the owners made a timely GM hire...maybe Agoos could have canned Ken. But, frankly, he hasn't yet, and it wouldn't be a massive upheaval to swap Lowdon for Ken.

I'd put it in simpler terms; the Bhathals locked Ken in when they yanked his interim tag after the six-win run. After that his ineptitude would have gotten any other HC canned ten minutes after the QF ended, and should have, anyway, regardless of the GM hiring.
