Is this the reason you don’t feel comfortable replying to her question of why you believe she supports transphobia?

Nah, you’re too young for social media:)

Back in the day, people would have gone and found out what he was actually saying, rather than blindly trusting people they don’t know

Definitely true of the US and Bluesky. But there’s still a clever left wing camping out on Twitter, if you look hard enough😘

Powell had repulsive views on race, was a coward in how he expressed them, and yet they were popular.

But his views in favour of legalization of homosexuality, abolition of capital punishment, and unilateral nuclear disarmament were much less popular.

Even then the “far right” label was stupid

Anyone who was dropped by the Scottish Greens for being too extreme is probably really rather out there.

But still on Twitter, if you want to avoid censorship?

I know that some people can only ever comprehend the world in terms of goodies and baddies, but if you can get beyond this binary, there’s a wonderful range of human experience out there

If you strip the tinfoil hat conspiracy material out of the article, is there actually a substantive point left at the end?

You’d be charged under section 24 of the Offences against the Person Act 1861, and probably get a couple of years in jail

There are some good niche communities here (like cricket:) but on any complex question this place is utterly worthless, as a few ideologues can instantly shut down any dissent from their party line

I’m fascinated by the Google reviews of the Ventnor Haven Fishery.

Half of them are “5* Best fresh fish I’ve ever bought!” and the other half are “1* Rudest customer service I’ve ever experienced”

Sort of supper and cabaret combo:)
May 31, 2025 at 8:31 PM
Yes, exactly that. I’m not sure why you think I’m arguing for something else?
May 31, 2025 at 2:15 AM
Indeed, but the US obsession with individualism is what has corrupted the left on line. Do you have a class based (rather than an individualist based) definition of sex?
May 31, 2025 at 2:01 AM
Oh my. I know that the US left has abandoned thinking about material reality in order to embrace the US obsession with individualism…but it’s still horrible seeing people make the same mistake

People with 46,XY 5-ARD can father children (assuming they have no other unrelated male infertility issues). There are harder questions (such as CAIS) but how can you possibly consider anyone with 5-ARD as not being male?
May 31, 2025 at 12:26 AM
The advantage of going through male puberty. This is what most sporting bodies have decided, and some of them (like World Rugby) have quite a lot of references on their website if you want to work out where you disagree
May 31, 2025 at 12:00 AM
Apologies, I should have been clearer:)

Once the problem of men in women’s sport became too hard to ignore, the major sports bodies started work.

If you look at all of the recent policies, they recognize the athletic advantage of male puberty, and hence cover both men with DSDs and trans women
May 30, 2025 at 11:54 PM
That’s just silly:) I suspect you’re smarter than this kind of snideswipe, and I don’t even know what your actual argument is yet?
May 30, 2025 at 11:48 PM
Sure, I understand that, but do you have a good argument against any of them?

Do you disagree with my conclusion that it is unlikely we’ll see any case like Semenya again?
May 30, 2025 at 11:39 PM
In the 2016 Rio Olympics Women’s 800m all three medals were won by men. Maybe you don’t care about this, but it made World Athletics realize it couldn’t ignore the problem any longer.

British Cycling had an even more acute realization when an elite male cyclist transitioned
May 30, 2025 at 11:34 PM
I know it’s a strong claim, but I *think* it’s defensible. There was poor sex testing until the late 90s, when it was abandoned. This encouraged unscrupulous coaches to scout for 5-ARD males (leading to the nadir of the Rio Olympics). Now they know this won’t work, the scouting will stop
May 30, 2025 at 11:25 PM
They’re the latest, but most major sports bodies have been introducing equivalent policies over the last few years.

And yes! Personally I prefer watching women’s rugby and tennis to their open category equivalents
May 30, 2025 at 11:12 PM
All of the new policies in Rugby/Swimming/Athletics/Hockey/Cycling etc are explicitly inclusive. Semenya is not excluded from participating in any sport, but is excluded from competing against women who haven’t had the athletic advantage of male puberty
May 30, 2025 at 11:06 PM
It is appalling how badly the IAAF treated Semenya - even suggesting medically damaging testosterone suppression. But Semenya is still male, and should never have been allowed to compete in women’s sport. Fortunately the new WA policy will ensure that this kind of thing never happens again
May 30, 2025 at 10:59 PM
Sport has to prioritize and balance safety, fairness, and inclusion. 2 interesting cases:

1 Tucker was initially engaged in support of Semenya’s CAS case, but realized that this broke fairness

2 Harper realized the advantage of male puberty, and abandoned fair for meaningful

I’m a 1; you’re a 2?
May 30, 2025 at 10:39 PM
Semenya went through male puberty, and has probably fathered children. There is no coherent definition of “biological sex” by which Semenya is a woman
