Walkable cities, academia, and hot parenting takes with statistics, mostly in NW DC/Ward 2+3. Occasionally in real urban centers like Bethesda or Arlington.
Always look at major injuries, not just deaths. (left-YTD2025) (right-YTD2024). Pedestrian and cyclist injuries are up in DC. Drivers/passengers are down.

Yeah. We’re going to get some rain soon.

I didn't see this coming, DC car deaths are significantly down YTD. Last year, we were at 25 deaths and 167 major injuries. This year, 9 deaths and 134 major injuries.

Glass half empty part, major injuries are up for pedestrians and cyclists.

Why are there so many faregate jumpers at the airports on WMATA? Or is this the artifact of luggage getting stuck in the gate? Like I just don't believe that 1/10 pax at Dulles are jumping the gate; which is more that double the system average.

In better news, it is kinda crazy that Texas' power mostly comes from green energy these days.

Its always funny to bring up federal tax revenue per capita. 9/10 the top states are solid blue. The bottom is mostly red

Its funny, outside of the DC metro gov, federal workers are mostly in very red rural areas. Broadly speaking feds are in rural areas and/or near military bases (keep in mind 1/3 of feds are ex-military).

Why is Spotify pushing video interviews for a site called ‘lad bible’ on my toddler’s account?

TIL: my wife’s rear ebike wheel assembly weighs more than my entire road bike does. Also, it apparently requires cutting a zip tie to remove from the bike.

And yes, my most frequent trip is from Cleveland Park to Metro Center to visit the MLK Library slide.

Apparently I only use the Metro when it is snowy or cold.

As a walk/bike commuter, I do often complain about cars. But here is your regular reminder that a key to satisfaction is being able to walk or bike to work. (data from DC commuters for the regional government)

I learned from @51st.news that DC had a MASSIVE lead water crisis from 2001-2005 that nobody seems to be aware of. Does this show up in crime stats, health stats, or education stats in DC? DC's young adults may be really messed up.
