Plant pathologist with an interest in microfungi on plants, lichens, lichenicolous fungi and aquatic hyphomycetes.
The group I've offered to facilitate is not part of @britmycolsoc.org.uk although the BMS are kindly supporting next year's in person course on #AquaticHyphomycete identification skills. There is no need to be a BMS member to take part in either learning experience.

We'll be welcoming new members from Italy, Germany and Norway, as well as more members from the UK. So many people keen to talk about #AquaticHyphomycete species. @funaction.bsky.social @isabelrfernandes.bsky.social @jandbio.bsky.social @funganaught.bsky.social @britmycolsoc.org.uk

I love theway these white saddles grow along the woodland path at RHS Harlow Carr. It's as if they want to be spotted.

Keen to find out which aquatic hyphomycetes you found up there.

If you feel you're missing out - which you are! - it's not too late to sign up at aquatichyphomycetes@gmail.com and join @jandbio.bsky.social @zimingwang.bsky.social and others on alternate Wednesday evenings. @funaction.bsky.social @britmycolsoc.org.uk

A number of questions were raised which we will cover at future meetings, including: how to isolate living spores and grow them in culture; how to collect aquatic hyphomycetes from leaves; and how to DNA barcode these tiny fungi. Plus we'll be getting tips to improve our identification skills.

...and @isabelrfernandes.bsky.social will be talking about the collection, and use, of foam samples. Others will be sharing tips and experiences. See you there! @funaction.bsky.social @jandbio.bsky.social @zimingwang.bsky.social @britmycolsoc.org.uk

I always find Anguillospora species difficult to name so only named Anguillospora crassa. I need my microscope with a x60 objective for those. X40 does give a better depth of field for photography though. I found two spores from my favourite species: Flabellospora accuminata. Absolutely gorgeous.

August: Working with only a x10 objective rather than a x20 made the task more difficult but I found nine species. Only seven of these were found in May.

This was a really sloppy sample of foam. As the waterfall runs faster there are no eddies to accumulate foam so what was collected was not much more than temporary bubbles.
