Instead of giving up, this amazing woman used her talent to fight back in the most beautiful way possible. In 1913, Zitkála-Šá wrote the libretto and songs for the first-ever Native American opera, "The Sun Dance." It was a revolutionary fusion of traditional Native American melodies with European classical music forms. She created a powerful statement that Native American culture deserved recognition and respect on the world's biggest stages. While boarding schools were trying to destroy Native American culture, Zitkála-Šá mastered classical music and then used it as a weapon of cultural preservation. Her opera was based on the sacred Sun Dance ceremony, which was banned by the U.S. government at the time. Through music, she preserved her people's traditions. But Zitkála-Šá's impact went far beyond music. She became one of the most important Native American rights activists of her time, using her platform and fame to fight for justice. She co-founded the National Council of American Indians and spent her life lobbying for increased political power for Native Americans. Her music gave her a voice that couldn't be silenced. Today, Zitkála-Šá reminds us how art can be the ultimate form of resistance. She honored her roots while mastering new skills, and that creativity can be the most powerful tool for social change. This is what happens when talent meets determination and cultural pride! Zitkála-Šá continues to inspire musicians, activists, and anyone fighting to preserve their identity in a world that tries to erase it.

Tumblr user yardsards: when i first moved in with my roommate, she was constantly throwing up and attributed it to some unexplainable chronic issue. after a year with me here, she's learned a lot about proper food preparation and storage, as well as having me sort of on top of managing groceries, and she almost never gets sick like that anymore. anyway i think that woman might be one of a kind but just in case she's not: if you find yourself having frequent tummy troubles with no clear explanation... maybe just. try refreshing your food safety knowledge. (also don't forget to wash your water bottle). like, chances are you've been doing everything right and there's some other reason. but there's a nonzero chance that something you assumed was common sense is actually incorrect and you've been repeatedly making yourself sick. people think kitchen management is totally easy and intuitive (prolly something to do with it being degraded as "women's work" but i digress) but there's science to food safety. and the people who raised you may have failed to teach you properly, whether through negligence or through not knowing everything themselves. it can't hurt to double check your knowledge here, just in case.

Yesterday, I was not allowed to check in for my return flight from Denver. When I arrived at the airport, I was told my legal name change had been reversed in the system and that I needed to prove my identity and gender using my old ID. But my name change was fully legal six years ago. I have complied fully with TSA requirements. My profile is updated, I met every condition to obtain a Real ID, and Delta already had my complete documentation. The gate agent even confirmed that my name in the system and on my boarding pass exactly matched my ID, as did my gender (listed as F, which is the only option in SC). And yet I was still pulled aside. I had to hand over my phone (which I refused to unlock so they just held it until I was done). My ID and every credit card in my wallet were examined. I was told I would only be allowed to board if I went through “additional screening.” That meant every item in my carry-on and my suitcase was inspected and swabbed. I was swabbed for explosives. Then a female agent performed a full pat-down and even asked me to lift my shirt because my chest shows the curve of pectus carinatum, a condition caused by lumbar scoliosis. They suspected I was carrying a concealed weapon pack on my body. And this is not the first time. Back in March, I was also stopped and questioned after simply coming out of the bathroom at the Dallas airport. I am not transgender. I am Two-Spirit and nonbinary, part of the broader trans umbrella. I have been doing LGBTQ advocacy work long enough that I anticipate experiences like this. I have the inner resiliency to endure them (which is not the same as them not having an impact). But not everyone does. For many, these humiliations can be frightening, silencing, even life-threatening. This is not a minor inconvenience. This is humiliation. This is being treated as a potential threat not because of anything I had done wrong, but because of who I am, and because the system chose to erase my legal name because our government wants to erase me and all of us who do not fit into their narrow checkboxes. And it leaves me asking a very direct question: Has JD Vance, who also had a full legal name change, ever been asked to reveal his testicles to prove he is who he claims to be? Or is this kind of invasive “proof” only demanded of those of us who are Two-Spirit, nonbinary, or transgender? Alisa Valdés story of being on a plane whose hydraulics failed as it prepared to land at LaGuardia hit me today (thanks Brian Weis for the share). The pilot told the passengers the truth: no wheels, no flaps, no brakes, no steering. They circled Manhattan and out to sea for four hours, burning off fuel before attempting a crash landing. And the cabin was silent. Not because anyone believed they were safe, but because they were suspended in that strange space between knowing and crashing, where hope carries you until the impact comes. That is where the United States is right now. The hydraulics are gone. The airport has been cleared for our crash. We are circling, burning fuel, waiting. And too many of you are sitting quietly, hoping it will somehow be okay. Trump now claims he is sending the National Guard into cities because of crime. But crime is down in every single one of those cities. What they are, instead, are the largest centers of resistance to his regime. And what happens when the government occupies the very cities where the most opposition exists? Do you believe that an administration that lied to justify occupation will simply walk away? Or is this the normalization of military control, one city at a time, while we sit in silence and pretend we are still in the air and not already falling? The guidebooks for this path already exist. We know where this goes. The alarms are blaring. The question is not whether we will keep circling. The question is when we will decide to resist before the crash comes. I know many of my family and friends out there voted for this man, this administration, and they go to churches each week that tells them this is holy. Well guess what - you are dead wrong, and more and more it is feeling like you are lining the streets and cheering while too many of us are harassed. So what will it take? How many of us will be executed or exiled from this nation before you start paying attention? Because now that I am home, I can name that I will survive this event, but not without trauma. Because the truth is, heading into that back room to be processed yesterday, I had no phone, according to TSA no legal ID, and I could have been one of the statistics, someone who disappeared into the system and no one could have known. And I name this, I have never felt so relieved at the privileges I carry, my less-melanated skin, my education, and my ability to advocate for myself, and knowing those privileges calls me to speaking out louder and more forcefully against the rising authoritarianism in our nation.

It is not the first time Rowling has used her over $1 billion net worth to influence legal cases nvolving so-called women's sex-based rights — a dog whistle used by herself and other anti-trans activists to exclude trans people from public spaces and reduce women to their genitals. Pandemic and lockdown are not the same thing. Lockdown and measures to prevent the spread of contagious disease have ended, but the pandemic continues. Powerful people just decided to let some folks suffer and die for their convenience.

The study found that those in the pandemic group who had Covid between the two scans experienced a drop in performance in mental flexibility and processing speed tests. In contrast, those who were not infected showed no significant cognitive changes, suggesting that structural aging does not always translate into visible functional symptoms.

Secret police are a well-known characteristic of authoritarian regimes. From Cromwell’s godly governors to the DDR’s Stasi, they typically target political opponents and dissidents through covert surveillance, imprisonment and physical violence. They use preemptive repression against threats to the regime. In Uganda, Idi Amin’s State Research Bureau employed spying equipment and intercepted mail at the post office. In Syria, Bashar al-Assad set up the General Intelligence Directorate to oversee a network of torture centers. In Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro uses the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) to spy on opponents overseas, often running operations out of embassies. Now the USA has a police force targeting political opponents and dissidents, even a judge and a mayor. It is not controlled by other security agencies and its director is devoted to Trump (Kristi Noem’s loyalty to Trump is as well known as her cruelty). The identity of its members and their operations are secret; they cover their faces, refuse to show their badges, and have no uniforms other than the casual wear similar to the costumes of most rioters on January 6. They carry out arbitrary searches, arrests, interrogations, indefinite detentions, disappearances and torture. We only know the victims who have become famous. There are nearly 50,000 victims of the so-called Homeland Security department. All of the participants in this attack on democracy and basic human rights must be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in order to prevent the rise of another authoritarian regime ever again. Homeland Security Investigations includes an intelligence division, while ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations arm uses third-party companies such as Geo Group, Giant Oak, and Palantir to conduct mass surveillance. These companies are making profit from authoritarian oppression and their complicity in violating human rights must be investigated and prosecuted, too.

The just world model is attractive for two reasons. First, like all magical thinking (if you do this, that will definitely happen), it takes a world of inexplicable outcomes, a world we can’t actually control, and draws it into our control. It enables Emma to believe that something like police violence won’t happen to her because of what she does. [1] Second, and closely related to the first, it says that we aren’t called to help the marginalized—the poor, ill, elderly, the victims of racism–, nor are we facing systemic injustice. The just world model is radically individual (which is why it’s so closely associated with neoliberalism). If you fail in life (or get cancer, or get shot by the police), it wasn’t because of larger issues of poverty, pollution, racism, or a police force indoctrinated to see itself as an army of occupation.[2] The just world model says we earned what we have, and are entitled to keep all of it. The just world model is racist. It may seem weird to say that it’s racist, since it doesn’t say anything about race, and neither Emma nor Hubert said anything about race. But racism isn’t necessarily about what you’re aware of believing—it’s often (most often?) about what you’re able to avoid thinking, seeing, or imagining.

Secret police who obscure their identities are a threat to everyone, whether they violate human rights directly or create an opportunity for crime. Every car on the road is a potential victim of ICE impersonators.
