Buried in the Doug Ford govt's fall budget are changes that would remove parts of Wasaga beach from provincial protection. As I reported in August, those parts are 60% of the world’s longest freshwater beach and the main nesting area for the endangered piping plover: thenarwhal.ca/wasaga-beach...

A month ago, Ontario’s Auditor General told Doug Ford’s government to create a public, accountable climate plan with emissions-reduction targets — as courts have also ordered.

Today, the government’s fall economic statement eliminates all legal obligation to do so. #onpoli

I’ve reported on the Doug Ford gov’t’s environmental record for 7 years and I remain concerned that Ontario’s only climate plan is a 2018 draft the auditor says isn’t evidence-based — and the gov’t now admits it won’t release a new plan or set stronger emissions-reduction targets

Unbelievably angry that this is a real headline I woke up to and nobody with an ounce of power is doing anything to stop this.

I've been majorly missing from public socials lately to deal with a Big Life Event 👇🏽🧿

But I'm back at my desk and ready to cover all the Ontario environment / energy things with @meyer.bsky.social & @elaineanselmi.bsky.social. Hit us up with your tips. We're @thenarwhal.ca ✌🏽 (but y'all knew that!)

This was fun to watch, but the PCs ultimately took it by a slight margin.

The Ontario election is spicy in Parry Sound-Muskoka where the Progressive Conservatives and Greens are literally NECK-TO-NECK!!!!

Just another day where the Metrolinx Milton Line has decided not to operate any trains on a Monday morning because it cannot sustain extreme Canadian weather. But all the Ontario party leaders "promised" to "invest" in public transit in the Family Day debate so things will be fine, right?

Crying watching Palestinian journalists heralded by their people today after news of the ceasefire — literally on their shoulders, like Hossam Shabat in these photos.

They were relentless in telling the world what was happening in Gaza. They lost too many colleagues. All respect forever.

Nov 3 '23: Palestine TV's Salman Al-Bashir throws his press gear after a colleague was killed. "Neither press vests nor helmets protect us"

Jan 15 '25: Al Jazeera's Anas Al-Sharif reports a ceasefire in Gaza & removes his gear. "I can now take off this vest that exhausted me"

Peel Region is one of the only Ontario municipalities with a “no turn away” policy.

When the pandemic-shuttered borders opened, asylum seekers came in droves (relaxed policies, conflicts & cheaper flights). Toronto shelters turned them away but "when Toronto is full, the overflow goes to Peel."

Never forget that Metrolinx's Milton Line — which connects Toronto to central Mississauga, and famously only runs for a few hours in the morning and afternoon — had a late night train for Taylor Swift concerts.

Governments can deliver public transit / climate action, but only when they want to.
