One of several private access stair-bridges to the beach in Montauk, NY, from residences built overlooking the sea. The stairways get partially or fully washed away, repaired, and rebuilt every few years. The erosion is obviously a challenge!

Hell Gate Bridge NYC. Photo from the Ferry. Hell Gate is a tidal zone on the East River that can be challenging to navigate without power propelling the boat. The name "Hell Gate" is a corruption of the Dutch phrase Hellegat likely taken from the Greek Hellespont (another dangerous water pass).
