There is not a space for civil society but these boycotts are probably the best indicators of public opinion and how the conditions for large-scale organizing are there when the opportunity arises for it to form.

Truly transformative political change can happen when the much larger states like Iraq, Egypt, or Sudan are able to transition. Tunisia, Lebanon, and hopefully Libya, one day, could be the catalysts for the successful change in these much larger countries.

Lebanon could be a safe haven for Arab dissidents and civil society. It could serve as a model and overseer of political openings in Syria, and maybe even later in other places.

Unlike the Tunisian, the Lebanese diaspora is larger and richer — thus, it would be able to have a larger economic impact with regards to Lebanese economic development.
