I dunno man. The movie theater is a wonderful place and I will always find my way there, but things and behaviors need to be adjusted to keep it thriving. People can love it like the sanctuary it is again… we just have to put in some work.

Theaters are making improvements in sound quality and screen size, but they also need to focus in on their projection quality. Make sure the screen is sized correctly to the movie’s aspect ratio. Make sure the projector is emitting enough light. Make the presentation matter!

Third, we could have a whole other conversation on capitalism here and the absurd mark-ups on these food products.

Yes… they are ridiculously overpriced in a lot of instances, but because they aren’t essential to the moviegoing experience, I don’t want to spend much time on them here.

First, we don’t need snacks during the movie. We like them — GOD DO WE LIKE THEM — but they’re not necessary during a movie.

Second, concessions help keep theaters in business as that is where they make their money.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
I think concessions could be another point of contention. It’s hard to fork over that much money for snacks during a movie. I am less inclined to swing hard on this one for numerous reasons:

I praise Alamo here, but I know indie theaters are doing it right. The State Theatre here in Sioux Falls just GETS it. The staff does their damnedest to make EVERY movie that plays on their screen a special event. They take pride in their presentation and they expect you to respect the cinema.

Do you pick up your phone to check your socials? Do you leave your ringer on? Do you answer your phone? Do you make phone calls during a goddamned movie at the theater?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, listen… maybe a movie theater isn’t the right place for you.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
Do you feel compelled to ask questions about the movie while you and everyone else in the theater are seeing it for the first time? Do you pick up your phone to respond to a non-emergent text message? Do you pick up your phone to play a game?
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
Do you talk at full volume multiple times during a movie? Do you crack jokes throughout the entire motion picture? Are you engaged in non-movie related conversations during the movie? Do you have to talk about that thing that just happened right now?
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
There are some people who maybe don’t need to go to the theaters. Maybe some people should wait for the movie to go to streaming. If that sounds elitist, maybe it’s time to evaluate whether or not you are a part of the problem:
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
More theaters should have a policy like the Drafthouse. There should be staff who can do theater checks or at least be responsive when a customer expresses their concern. More than that, though, is that people just need to be fucking respectful.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
There are other people who have paid to see the movie — they didn’t pay to hear your conversations or to see you play Candy Crush. They didn’t pay to be privy to your Mystery Science Theater audition or watch you record a scene of the movie for your socials.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
To be blunt, audience members should know that when the lights go down and the movie starts, it is time to stop everything else and shut the fuck up. You are not at home. This is not your living room.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
Alamo also strictly enforces a no talking, no phones policy. THIS is what makes going to the movies a stressful endeavor for some. It shouldn’t be the other patrons’ job to shush audience members or ask them to put their phones away.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
I am also lenient on Alamo because they make the preshow worth getting there early. “Order your food and watch this fun collection of clips we assembled that are related to the movie you are about to see!” Yeah. I’m in.

@alamodrafthouse.bsky.social is the one chain that seems to do it right. Yes, there are ads for Alamo programs and products, but the trailers are limited and the movies start within ten minutes of the showtime.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
The movie should start within ten minutes of the listed showtime. Show me 3 - 4 trailers and move on. That basketball star isn’t going to convince me to buy a Sprite. The AI animals won’t convince me to get a Coke. I already have what I need. Start the show.
November 16, 2025 at 12:33 AM
… or to sign up for your rewards program. You have plenty of signage up over the theater; that is good enough.

Also… the listed showtime needs to be the time the movie starts. No bonus five minutes of ads, seven trailers, and five more minutes of ads…
