I can definitely understand after cold steel being fed up with trails tropes but daybreak having them go from cold steel "gay people are scary deviants" to "I love my transgender child" alone is like oghhhhhhh

Everytime I tried it over the years it's like you could make the most ironclad reasonable normal comment trying to communicate with someone and no matter what a guy will appear who talks like he was just born and you're speaking in inscrutable tongues or something

Very true especially about tabletop characters, it reminds me of a friends game forever ago where the dm started killing people nonstop because they got huge into GoT and everyone just lost all the energy to even do anything because the investment to payoff was just completely destroyed

It's mainly sad because the presentation, pixel art, and core ideas are all there, and even the weird jrpg person standing around saying weird thing is represented Ideally. But then everything else is Functional. It reminds me of early fire emblem if there was like 3x as many Bandits

It's fascinating that this and tactical breach wizards are so irreverent within a genre that is replete with more serious or at least deliberate narratives. I think irreverence can work but it must be married with intent lest it become a situation where the reader says "why should I care then?"

Like everything at the end of the Finale and the Protagonist Switch is fantastic and sells you on everything the series is good at and then oh, we have to Do Justice to popular game we were trying to emulate by also copying when it's at its worst
