Modern DDoS attacks are:

Multi-vector (volumetric + app-layer)
Time-compressed (<2 min bursts)
Packet-rate weaponized (exhausting CPU/state tables)
Persistent (2-5 hour campaigns)

Traditional "big pipe + manual mitigation" struggles with all four.

OSS contributions spike when engineers hit production problems urgent enough that they can't wait for vendor roadmaps.
Enterprise procurement accelerates when those problems escalate beyond the network team.
Both at once = the threat outpaced the available tooling.
