perpetually obsessed with some dead, queer guy (it's hugh despenser the younger currently)
am i using the hour long break i have in oxford on my way to leamington spa to go and walk past oriel college cos edward founded it? of course i am.

never been to oxford before, and don't have long enough to do much, but, you know. edward.

i will never stop laughing that chaplais' argument is that a brotherhood covenant makes it less likely that edward and piers were lovers when the practice fell out of favour precisely because it became known that men who were having sex with each other entered them.

i am so proud of caerphilly. this win is so important for so many reasons, genuinely overwhelmed by it.

i might be going to kenilworth in november.

it will change me.

i'm telling you, some straight historians will only acknowledge historical queerness so they can reject specific examples.

i was working on my commonplace book today, which i think of as my medieval one it's a place where, originally, i'd put any notes of concepts i wasn't familiar with when reading about edward ii, but it's basically filled now and it has become a hugh despenser commonplace book.

insta is showing me, and i can only assume it's a trend on tiktok or smthg, trans masc gender euphoria reels damn near constantly, and, like, mine is hugh despenser the younger. straight up. edward ii too, but especially hugh.
October 13, 2025 at 3:55 PM
reading dan jones' plantagenets cos historiography blah blah blah, but, like, this man only has an undergrad degree and is a columnist for a bunch of right leaning publications...i know the answer to this, but at the same time, why is this the man to helm popular medieval history????

i'm left handed, i also wrote by hand pretty much every day. i never, ever have a problem with smearing ink despite not once ever having used a "left-handed" pen, and, frankly, i don't understand what other left handed people are doing if ink smudging is a problem for them.
October 9, 2025 at 4:55 PM
that stage of hyper-fixation where seeing someone else talk about edward ii makes me tear up with how much i love him.
October 3, 2025 at 6:53 PM
idk if it was my edition or what, but right at the end of follies of the king, *henry* of lancaster started being referred to as thomas and, like...did no one notice. it's pretty much for the whole extent that Henry is even in the book. it was weird.
September 27, 2025 at 3:40 PM
the description of hugh in plaidy's follies of the king is...fascinating.

the book is trash, boring as fuck, but also just straight up fascinating.

i haven't read much of that new james i & IV book, but it's very good.

queen james from earlier this year was also great, i do not know what we did to deserve *two* new and interesting james books this year, but i'm grateful.

i can either go and see born with teeth or i can buy same-sex sexuality in later medieval english culture, but i cannot afford both.
September 17, 2025 at 4:36 AM
i want to see the marlowe/shakespeare fanfic play so bad, but it'd be so expensive for me to go. but, by christ, i want to.
September 16, 2025 at 3:50 PM
kudos to mann for making circuit parties sound genuinely appealing to me, someone who has literally never set one foot into a nightclub, but the last fifty pages of where the boys are kinda...idk, sucked?

i don't like super tidy endings, especially not after 400 pages of fun as hell mess.

racists absolutely *should* fear for their lives because they're racists. they literally do not deserve to be a part of any society that intends to uphold the dignity and wellbeing of all people.
September 11, 2025 at 3:54 PM
It's good he's dead, actually. Racists should die.
September 11, 2025 at 4:53 AM
the sceptred ilse claims, as its subtitle, that it is a new history of the fourteenth century, which, cool, i am always down for that.

except it is the most orthodox, conventional account of the period you could imagine.

the only thing i bought on hobonici day was the moomin cover, i may get more stuff, but holy shit this moomin cover is the most beautiful thing i own now. gorgeous.
September 2, 2025 at 5:00 PM
i mean, i'm english and i am personally offended by the union and st george's flags cos i'm all too aware of the genocidal shit that's been done under them and would just rather not see them in any context. they both reek of jingoism.
September 1, 2025 at 8:51 AM
there's a online course i want to do and i cant cos it runs on a wednesday and i don't finish until 7 but it's about medieval art and i am big mad about it.
August 29, 2025 at 4:05 PM
right, again, the convention is that edward did nothing to stop hugh fucking about in wales, but every book that does this is also keen to point out that the marcher lords has special treatment and were more independent of the crown than other areas.
August 27, 2025 at 10:25 AM
i've read the friend, i've read same-sex unions in pre-modern europe, and i've read piers gaveston edward ii's adoptive brother, so please, please, please someone explain to me how medieval sworn brotherhoods preclude sexual contact????
August 26, 2025 at 4:07 PM
oh boy. i bought sceptred ilse on audio cos brand new book that talks, at least a little, about hugh despenser? absolute no brainer.

but it uses the word homosexual in relation to edward and his sexuality and...no, don't do that.
